I distinctly remember a bunch of college basketball fans, more specifically, Big 12 fans. Preseason polls forced me to run into Kansas fans online who would make incredibly bold statements about the AAC. “Wait until you actually have to play real teams.” “Can’t play the cupcake squads anymore.” If I could find it, I’d even post tweets of those predicting UH would end up in the bottom half of the Big 12. The disrespect to Memphis (and Cincy for like one season) was atrocious. But look at us now, number one in the nation deep into Big 12 play.
And all this is on the back of an offense that struggles to score regularly. Sure, going into the first couple games of conference play, I was slightly expecting UH to falter pretty handily because the Big 12 is hard-nosed conference still full of big hitters. Turns out, Kelvin and the boys needed to make sure everyone underestimated the team. Because look at us now – beating number 6 and 11 (at the time) in the nation within a week. Jamal Shead continues to show why he has a legitimate chance to win conference player of the year, despite the geniuses who pegged him as Sasser’s shadow.
Nonetheless, I genuinely needed to write this as a “I told you so” to all the detractors. Because I felt like a man in the wasteland watching pundits and trucker profile pics alike talking about how UH had never played anyone. Sure, it didn’t help that our non-conference schedule looked more like a Sprinkles’ cupcake storefront than that one SEC week. But, after a slow start, UH leads the entire Big 12 in standings and in offensive and defensive efficiency (oh no the metrics love UH it’s like they’re right or something).
UH went so far as to Elvin UT (and he scored a point! yay for our Victorian boy!), which is more disgusting than what Penix did to them . LJ Cryer still leads the team in points (15 PPG), even if he is somewhat inconsistent game-to-game, but Sharp especially has really stepped up. And, realistically, the entire team continually stepping up on defense, even when a team like Baylor gets disgustingly hot, has led to this moment. I’m a man who lives and dies by KenPom, so every time I see UH going hard on defense, or fighting for that offensive rebound, my heart flutters. (Also, speaking of KenPom, if anyone wants to argue UH is lucky – maybe the Iowa St. game – UH is ranked 144, so luck isn’t really a factor).
This still isn’t a championship winning team in my opinion. UH still struggles on first-chance scoring, which can really hurt when the team they’re playing doesn’t allow for the 6’10 method to work. But this team is better than last year’s team. And I’ve so enjoyed watching them get to this point.
I’m writing this before the game tonight to effectively and efficiently gloat before the inevitable. Being number one is actually a curse. If anything, I wish Purdue had somehow moved into first, or maybe the voters had missed the Creighton game. But, this presented the perfect opportunity to shove it in everyone’s face. The disrespect was tiring last season when UH was running through every team with disgusting efficiency, and showing Memphis up (even though their players were 27 and had fervent hate). So now, I rest easy, knowing that in UH’s first season, number one was achieved.
