The Copa America Failures are on CONMEBOL

There has been this line going around trying to blame America for all the issues of the Copa America. It’s a mix of Europeans (whom I hate) trying to score points because it’s soccer and those who just want a reason to score points against America. I wouldn’t consider myself very patriotic, but the moment soccer gets involved I’m ready to join the Rough Riders. I also find it annoying that there is a large contingent of viewers who are blaming this on US Soccer or US security in general. As if we don’t host large-scale events every week from August to April.

Obviously you see this and think, “what a failure on the part of the organizers.” Because it is a total failure of security. At a final, especially where you’ve already had players rushing the stands to fight, you have to be lockdown. This is 4th and 3 with the game on the line, and that running back has some beefy power. Instead of organizing well, there was a state of panic like the last boat off the Titanic, and the players and other fans were left to suffer the consequences of such an oversight. There were also a ton of field issues (especially at MetLife – the host of the 2026 World Cup Final). With the vibe of CONMEBOL play as a whole, from ahn outside perspective this tournament was a harbinger for the lack of organization about to happen in two years.

Every single game this was true.

I am fully under the impression that the European pretty boys would be unable to survive a CONMEBOL tournament. More realistically, I don’t think a single European team would survive a tournament on the Americas. The entire hemisphere is a collection of seeing if the strong survive. In some way, it is the birthright of everyone born on the two continents (tornadoes and hurricanes, Amazonian snakes and bugs, and really any other hazard you can think of. The optics of the entire tournament have led to takes, like these:

And this:

Just remember this: any time a Brit speaks disregard everything they say. To say nothing about their cuisine or hygiene, they are two heartbeats away from being ruled by a child. Say what you want about the gaggle of geriatrics who run this country, but at least they don’t need their parents permission to open a checking account. Also, a disturbing amount of them think they can visit New York and California in the same day, and make it to Florida for dinner. They are an unserious people who do not know a thing outside their miserable island (not you Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. Wales you are too comfy with the English). Their opinions on the Copa America are also wrong, as well.

This won’t be an extremely long explainer, but I wanted to get it out there. The flaws of the Copa America fall directly on CONMEBOL and their want to make more money. The US already hosted a Copa America in 2016 – the 100th anniversary of the Copa America. And guess what? It went extremely fine. Why do you think COMNEBOL was okay with pivoting the tournament from Ecaudor last minute?

Even in 2016 the MetLife field sucked, but it didn’t suck this badly. The very long story of it all is this — US made a lot of money in 2016, and CONMEBOL wanted more of it. So now we have this situation where CONMEBOL wanted more of the profits.

So the situation became this: US Soccer was given money for the rights and then, much like Pontius Pilate, washed their hands of it. CONMEBOL then was in charge of everything, including fields and security. This CBS article outlines everything that happened – including CONMEBOL taking control of the Copa.

And, the situation at Hard Rock was the fault of CONMEBOL. Stadiums provide some security, but the organizer is in charge of providing extra security and coordinating with police. So it was incredibly cool of CONMEBOL to wait until the last minute to inform CONCACAF and the local authorities that more security was needed.

Translated: “Yesterday and today, CONMEBOL urged its CONCACAF peers and the Miami security authorities to reinforce police controls.”.

But don’t you worry your head. Remember when Putin investigated himself when a political opponent was killed and found no wrong-doing? Well don’t worry, CONMEBOL investigated itself and found no wrongdoing on their part.

To end all this, CONCACAF and US Soccer shouldn’t allow CONMEBOL to run a Copa America on its soil by itself. CONMEBOL has show they shouldn’t be trusted with leading, and the blame and damage will fall on the venues.

And don’t worry about 2016. The US is relatively good about hosting tournaments it has a hand in organizing. I wasn’t alive and have only seen highlights, but I’ve read that the 1994 World Cup was run spectacularly. I see no reason, especially with the constant hosting by venues in America, why in 2 years it will be any different.
